CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Authorities reported a woman died after a fall which happened on Sunday morning at Giant City State Park. The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said an Alabama woman fell from a cliff at around 11:06 a.m. on June 8, near Devil's Standtable Trail.
First responders from Jackson County Ambulance Service, Makanda Township Fire Department, and Carbondale Fire Department quickly arrived at the scene.
Upon arrival, authorities said they found a 31-year-old from Daphne, Alabama, and 37-year-old Ashley Stempien, of Mt. Vernon, Alabama, at the base of the cliff.
The sheriff's office said Stempien reportedly slipped and fell approximately 55 feet. Riddle immediately called 911 and went to the base to find her.
Stempien suffered severe injuries from the fall and was transported to a medivac helicopter from Arch Air Medical Service.
Authorities said she died during the flight to a St. Louis area hospital. The St. Louis Office of the Medical Examiner pronounced her dead at around 1:39 p.m.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources are investigating the incident.
