Church bells to ring in Murphysboro exactly 100 years after Tri-State Tornado hits community

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WSIL) -- An event on the final day of the week-long commemoration for the 100th anniversary of the Tri-State Tornado will take place on Tuesday, March 18, in Murphysboro.

There will be a Public Commemoration at Longfellow Park, at 401 North 20th Street in Murphysboro, at 1:30 p.m. to remember the victims of the Tri-State Tornado.

Local officials will read off proclamations and resolutions and unveil a historical marker. This will be for the Murphysboro community.

Officials will also publicly read aloud the names of more than 300 people who died due to the tornado.

Church bells in Murphysboro will also ring at 2:32 p.m., as this is the time when the tornado hit the community of Murphysboro 100 years ago, on March 18.

The F5 tornado created havoc and traveled 219 miles through roughly 20 counties across Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The National Weather Service said this tornado possibly had winds of more than 300 mph, killing 695 people in its path. This includes 234 deaths in Murphysboro, 33 deaths at De Soto school, 2,027 injuries and destroyed 15,000 homes.
