WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A pro-life organization has filed a petition in the Supreme Court of the United States in a review of a case to restore sidewalk counselor's right to offer support to women outside of abortion facilities.
A was filed by the Thomas More Society on July 16, 2024, to the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, in Coalition Life v. City of Carbondale, asking the Supreme Court to review and overturn the Hill v. Colorado case.
The Hill v. Colorado case was argued on January 19, 2000, and was decided on June 28, 2000. According to , Colorado passed a law which prevented anti-abortion activists from approaching within eight feet of another person within a 100-foot zone surrounding a health care facility while they were engaged in protests or leafletting activity without the target audience's consent.
News 3 previously reported a group bringing a lawsuit against the City of Carbondale for a "bubble" ordinance in 2023. Officials with Coalition For Life then argued the provision was unconstitutional and violates the First and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.
On July 13, 2024, the City of Carbondale held a meeting to repeal the previous ordinance.
In the Petition of Writ of Certiorari, the question is presented "Whether this Court should overrule Hill v. Colorado.
