VIENNA, Ill. (WSIL) -- A local lawmaker is speaking out about an incident which took place at the Shawnee Correctional Center recently.

Illinois State Senator Dale Fowler addressed the public, stating he was recently informed about correctional workers exposed to an unknown substance delivered through the mail at the Shawnee Correctional Center.

"The safety and well-being of our correctional officers, as well as all individuals within the facility, must remain our highest priority," Senator Fowler stated in a Facebook post. "This serious matter warrants a thorough investigation, and I am committed to working with my fellow lawmakers and labor representatives to explore necessary reforms to prevent this from happening again. We must ensure our prison system has the proper protocols and resources in place to protect those who serve and reside within it."
