The National Weather Service report winds reaching up to 60 mph in Jefferson County.
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. (WSIL)--- Some damage was reported in Jefferson County. People reported downed trees, powerlines and damage to the South Central Transit Building, which houses their buses.
People came to work on Friday at the South Central Transit building in Mount Vernon to see the damage from last night's severe weather.
"Right now, we had to suspend services indefinitely, but at least we have a weekend to try and cooperate and get some plan of action together," Sherri Bassen, the Public Relations official for the transit said.
Bassen says they do a lot of medical transports, but they hope to resume as soon as possible.
"Obviously, getting some of the vehicles out is going to be a big task. And there are a lot of them that don't have windows because they were blown out," Bassen said.
The strong winds ripped the roof off the transportation building, leaving damage all over the neighborhood.
"My damage was created from the other direction, basically items coming into the building," Jack Simmons said.
Simmons has a business next to the transit building and could still open his store.
"Well, It's been slow today other than sightseers going through the parking lot," Simmons said.
The people living across the street from the transit building shared that they had, two trees down in their yard, including one that blocked their driveway Thursday night.
The woman who lives here says her husband had to get them last night to make sure they didn't step on any downed powerlines. And other people were out assessing the damage in their yards today.
"You could hear everything whipping and carrying on out here. We did not know if it was straight-line wind or a tornado," Tammy Vanmeter said.
Vanmeter said her husband told her to take her dogs and get in the closet when they heard the sirens.
"The yard looked really bad, and yes, I know it could have been worse, but it's just stuff," Vanmeter said.
The National Weather Service says they are planning to assess the damage from the winds on Saturday to see what kind of severe weather it was.
