CARBONDALE, Ill. -- People gathered in Carbondale for the 25th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr Community Celebration on Sunday.
Southern Illinois residents came to the Carbondale Civic Center to celebrate Dr. King.
We talked to one pastor who helped plan the ceremony. He says there's still a lot of work to be done in the community.
Christopher E. Swims said, "Today as a community as a region we're coming together to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther Kings life. So we got people from Carbondale Marion down south just all over Southern Illinois coming together to commemorate his death his life. and to celebrate how far we've come but also to realize how much more that we need to do."
The theme for this years ceremony was "It Begins with Me, CommUNITY."
Others we spoke to say they like coming out each year-- because of the unity it brings to the city.
