JEFFERSON COUNTY (WSIL) -- A veteran from Jefferson County encourages others to help disabled veterans.
Navy Veteran Harry Leneave says his father inspired him to help other veterans when after he was wounded in the service
"He was too proud. He wouldn't take no handout from anybody. He was so messed up, with PTSD that he wouldn't even sign up for his own social security," he said.
So he began volunteering at the s center in Mt. Vernon.
"We provide volunteer drivers to drive the vans to pick up all the veterans. You don't have to be a disabled veteran You just have to be a veteran and if you need to go to the doctor or somewhere, we'll get you there," he said.
He says they help dozens of veterans, but the coronavirus has interfered with getting more members to help out.
"It's a real fine organization. I think you'd enjoy it if you would come to a meeting," he said.
And they are working to raise more money for veterans.
"We've got a lot of different people that donate money to us and we really appreciate it, like the Kyle Price Foundation," he said.
Because of his journey, he says he wants to help as many veterans as he can.
"It's the kids it's the spouse we want to help everybody and that's why I'm so passionate about it because I know how my life was."
