CARTERVILLE, ILLINOIS (WSIL) -- While school might be out for the summer, there are still plenty of ways to keep your student's mind active.

John A. Logan college is offering more than 30 summer camps for kids.

One of those camps is called "Birds, Bees and Beasts". Campers will get to learn about pollinators, bird watch, dissect animals and owl pellets, and set up trail cams to see creatures at night.

Instructor Dr. Esmarie Boyles say campers will spend most of their time outdoors on trails and ponds at campus.

"I know students are tired of spending time online and in front of their computers," she says. "So we will go on nature hikes."

Another activity that goes along with "Birds, Bees and Beasts" is called "sm'ART' camp and projects will be based on the STEAM foundation of science and engineering using art materials.

One example is learning about using paint on a pendulum to learn about how it swings and equilibrium.

However, Instructor Gretchen Cudworth says her favorite project ties into the work of artist Alexander Calder.

"We're going to be creating wire mobiles," she states. "So the students are going to be learning about balance and design. Then we're going to follow that up with wire portraits."

Also new this year is 'Fun with Hair, Skin and Nails camp', so participants can master basic self-care skills and make their own products.

"We'll mostly be making scrubs," says Connie Robinson, Cosmetology coordinator. "You can make those out of sugar, epsom salt, essential oils; but you have to be careful with the essential oils.

Robinson adds the camp might peak the interest of kids to want to get into cosmetology and come back to John A. Logan for their program.

Camps for adults are also back for the summer as well.
