CARBONDALE, IL (WSIL) -- For Carbondale residents, fighting cancer has never been so sweet thanks to the combined efforts of a new organization called Fighting Cancer Today and Mary Lou's Grill in Carbondale, which offered customers a tasty treat, for a good cause.

Proceeds from every slice of pie sold Friday morning benefits the new organization, which aims to help both patients and caregivers through the difficulties of cancer.

In 2019, Marion native Cierra Johnson fought an aggressive form of breast cancer and is still undergoing treatment today. This led her to start her non-profit to help other families going through cancer, and with a team of other survivors, help them heal emotionally and financially.

"We really want to help restore hope and faith in the lives of families fighting cancer," explains Johnson. "As a current breast cancer survivor, I know what it means to fight cancer and the challenges that families face when they get home, and that's the part where our organization comes in, we want to give them that support that they need so they can keep fighting."

Fundraising efforts Friday also included a 'Sweet Treats for Charity' raffle. Volunteers with create and deliver care boxes to individuals.
