WEST FRANKFORT, Ill (WSIL) -- Local organizations want to help get food to hungry people especially if they can't afford it.
Wednesday, Molina Healthcare partnered with Dale Fowler's foundation for a mobile food market. It was at the former outlet mall in West Frankfort.
Feeding America estimates Franklin County, Illinois has more than 6,000 people facing food insecurity. That means they have to skip meals because they can't pay for them.
That 6,000 estimate is actually from before the pandemic. That means the need is even greater now.
"I think with COVID-19 and things happening, I think there's a lot of people struggling right now. Anyway we can fit in and help meet the need and feed the people or anything else, we're here to help," says Erin McNamara-Stafford, Community Engagement Specialist with Molina Healthcare.
Organizers say they handed out free food to 200 families. Ameren Illinois was also there to give out free LED lightbulbs to keep home-energy costs down.
