JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. (WSIL) --- Four juveniles were in a crash with a reported stolen vehicle. The Johnston City School District confirms one of its students died in the crash.

The other three juveniles remain in critical condition.  The driver was a 16-year-old girl who was pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital.

Several Johnson City community members were sad to learn news about a severe car accident involving the four young people.

"Anytime a child dies, it's felt throughout the entire community," said Sam Mocaby.

"It's such a tragic thing. My heart goes out to their families," Mary Stevens said.

Stevens also said sometimes young people make bad decisions and accidents can happen to anyone.

"We forget sometimes, and sometimes our judgment is impaired. Just by the way we think," Stevens said.

The Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diedrich says the crash happened Monday morning around 6:30 am on Cochran Road between Old Creal Springs and Saline River Road when the car left the road, crashing into a tree.

"They are from different communities. So, we have not been able to determine why they were together, why they were traveling on that particular road at that time of morning," Sheriff Deiderich said.

Diederich says the other three teenagers involved in the crash are from Jefferson County and Marion.

"The juveniles are aged 13, 16, 16, and 17. The deceased female was 16 years old," Deiderich said.

The vehicle involved in a crash was reported stolen in Johnston City. Diederich says the car was a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, which is a part of the Hyundai models that are easy to steal because of the way that they are made.

"We've seen the theft of quite a few of them. So again, we don't know that these juveniles stole the vehicle. We simply know they were in possession of the vehicle that they were operating it," Diedrich says. "But at the end of the day, what we're dealing with is a terrible tragedy that involves four juveniles. The outline information will come to light in due time, but at this moment, it's somewhat irrelevant. We're deeply concerned for the safety of these juveniles."

The Johnston City High School sent out a letter to parents and guardians notifying them about the crash, and says they will have counselors available to meet with their students.
