HAYTI, Mo. -- One person is dead after a crash between a backhoe and a train in southeast Missouri.

Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) said the crash happened on Gettings Lane in Hayti at 3:40 p.m. on August 20.

MSHP reported Thomas Jackson, 37 of Caruthersville, was operating a 2018 John Deere 310 SL Backhoe when the vehicle failed to yield to a EMV SD70Ace Locomotive train. The backhoe was then hit by the train, authorities said.

Jackson was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pemiscot County Coroner.

MSHP states this is the 42nd death related crash in the Troop E area which covers southeast Missouri.
