CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- Five officers with the Cape Girardeau Police department received an award after performing life saving treatment following a grocery store shooting incident.
Officials responded to a shots fired report on Friday, February 24, 2023. After they arrived, they found a person who was on their back and bleeding from their groin.
After ensuring the public's safety Ptlm. Joseph Whistler and Ptlm. Jessica Humphreys began applying a tourniquet to the groin while Cpl. Cody Farrow obtained gauze and began packing it into the wound in an attempt to stop the bleeding.Â
Ptlm. Cody Owens and Ptlm. Whistler then attempted to stop the exit wound from bleeding by packing it with gauze.
Ultimately, the victim was transported to a local hospital and survived his injuries.
It was determined that the victim had accidentally shot himself in the groin area when attempting to disassemble his legally owned firearm.
Based on these officers� actions and extraordinary performance in their duty to save the life of the victim, who would have likely died if not for their actions, all officers involved received the CGPD's Life Saving Award.
Sgt. Blanner, Cpl. Farrow, and Ptlm. Owens also received life saving medals as this was the second time receiving the Life Saving Award.
