CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- Two people were rescued in an apartment fire in Cape Girardeau on Wednesday.
Firefighters responded to an apartment fire in Cape Girardeau at 1:50 p.m. in the 100-block of Clark Street on February 12.
Once firefighters got to the scene, they found flames and smoke coming from an apartment window on the second floor.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department said two people were trapped in the apartment which was on fire. Firefighters said they quickly got a ladder up to the window and then rescued the two people inside.
Also during this time, firefighters attacked the fire going inside the apartment building which resulted in knocking down the flames quickly.
Fire officials said all people within the apartment were accounted for and nobody needed medical assistance. However, one cat was found deceased.
Fire crews then went in to make sure everything was ventilated and said the fire didn't spread to nearby units.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Department said the actions taken by the firefighters helped ensure the safety and integrity of the surrounding units.
Assisting the Cape Girardeau Fire Department were fire crews from Jackson, Gordonville, Fruitland, Benton and Chaffee.
The Cape Girardeau Fire Marshal investigated the matter and said the cause of the fire was due to a cooking-related incident.
The total financial amount lost due to the fire was estimated at $100,000.
