CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. -- UPDATE: Nov. 23, 10:43 p.m. - The city of Cape Girardeau says the water is safe to drink and use normally. They stated the boil water advisory has expired following safe and clean lab tests.
ORIGINAL: Nov. 22, 1:32 p.m. -- A precautionary boil water advisory is in effect for nearly 6,000 addresses in the city of Cape Girardeau through Friday afternoon.
The advisory follows a main line which was repaired in the city. The advisory is in effect for 5,747 addresses in Cape Girardeau, affecting homes in the center portion and central eastern portion of the city.
The precautionary boil water advisory is in place until 4 p.m. on November 24, or unless otherwise notified.
This is for water customers on the east side of North Kingshighway, from around Hopper Street south to William Street and east to North Main Street from Bertling Street down to William Street.
You are advised not to drink tap water in this area and to use only bottled water or water that has been boiled for 3 - 5 minutes.
The city said there is no known contamination, but they are testing the water and it is a two-day process.
"On behalf of staff and partners, the City of Cape Girardeau is very sorry for this significant inconvenience over the holiday," the city of Cape Girardeau said on the city's website.
