MT. VERNON VETERANS MEMORIAL PARK BRIDGE RIBBON CUTTING

MT. VERNON, Ill. (WSIL) Mt. Vernon is celebrating a new addition to its green spaces with the official ribbon cutting of a walking bridge at Veterans Memorial Park.

Hosted by the Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Mt. Vernon Park District, the event drew a crowd of residents and community leaders. They gathered to mark the latest step in improving the city’s park system.

The bridge is now open for public use and connects more sections of the park, offering safer, scenic access for walkers, joggers, and families.

Park officials say the updates are especially important as summer approaches, giving kids and families more opportunities to enjoy outdoor spaces.

"Down the road we'll upgrade that area and maybe add picnic tables.. a little shelter area.. that's still in discussion, but overall we're gonna make that area look very appealing to get people out there", says Mckenzie May, Parks Manager

This project is part of a broader initiative by the Park District to invest in recreation and outdoor amenities across Mt. Vernon. More park improvements are expected to be announced in the coming months.Â
