A Taste of the Region: Guero’s

  • 0

MT. VERNON (WSIL) -- Several viewers reached out to our News 3 Brooke Schlyer wanting her to try Guero's Mexican Restaurant and she answered that call.

The restaurant is located downtown and owned by Carlos and Jennifer Carmona.

Jennifer says she takes care of the customers upfront while Carlos is busy in the kitchen making sure each plate goes out to his perfectionist standard.

Most of the dishes have been passed down to Carlos from family members still living in Mexico.

"A lot of the recipes came from his family in Puebla," Jennifer explains.

The couple says they want the restaurant to feel like home from visitors and many regulars have made it just that.

"Everybody knows everybody," Jennifer says. "People going from table to table and it's just fun again."

To start, Brooke tried the guacamole with chunky pieces of avocado, tomato, onion, cilantro, and jalapeno.

Although it's listed as an appetizer, many customers choose the made-to-order dish as a light lunch.

As a first entree, Brooke got a taste of the enchilada Verdes.

It's a corn tortilla stuffed with shredded chicken and topped with a spicy tomatillo sauce.

The dish is served with a hefty serving of homemade Mexican rice.

Next is a customer favorite at Guero's, Vallarta, which started off as a special and is now a staple at the restaurant.

It's a bed of Mexican rice topped with sauteed onions, mushroom, chicken and shrimp.

The food is then SMOTHERED in homemade queso.

Brooke finished off trying the el pastor street tacos, which are corn tortillas filled with pulled pork.

The pork is marinated with special seasonings, pineapple juice, and chipotle peppers. The meat is then topped with onion and cilantro.

BROOKE'S PICK:When it comes to Guero's the word that POPS into my mind is fresh. I really enjoyed the guacamole with huge chunks of perfectly ripe avocado, onion, tomato and cilantro; and just a squeeze of lime juice. It's a great option as an appetizer or a light lunch. I also recommend the street tacos as the pork has a nice smoky flavor to it and then topped again with FRESH onion and cilantro. If you like spicy, which I love, you have to top the tacos with the green tomatillo sauce it has a nice kick to it! YUM!
