Military mom surprises son and daughter at school pep rally

OSSIAN, Ind. (WPTA21) - Two Norwell Middle School students thought they were being surprised with an award, but they received much more than that.

Friday afternoon, teachers and staff at Norwell Community Schools organized a pep rally in the high school gymnasium.

Jalyne and Justin Volz, sixth and seventh graders, respectively are recent transfers to the district. On top of getting used to a new school, their mom Amanda has been away for several months, deployed through the 122nd Fighter Wing.

Soon after the pep rally began, Jalyne and Justin were called down to receive an award for perseverance and work ethic, acknowledging how difficult this time has been for the sister and brother.

Instead, their mom entered the gym, surprising them with her return home.

"I have the most amazing support system, as you can tell. They're all here, just to come support my kids for a fake award. So it's pretty incredible to be home and to know that no matter what I'm doing that my kids are well taken care of," said Amanda Volz.

Volz said it's not easy being away from her family, but moments like these make it worth it.
