Unsung Hero: Harrisburg District Library staff

Harrisburg (WSIL) -- Over the summer, Harrisburg District Library offered creative ways to keep the community connected and active during the coronavirus pandemic.

The library typically offers big programs throughout the summer for all ages, but in March, the pandemic forced administrators to shut the facility down.

Staff came up with new ways to engage residents by offering virtual programs like a weekly story hour, yoga for kids and adults, Facebook live trivia, photo contest, and take and make activities. The activities allowed people to pick up an activity bag with instructions for them while they are at home.

Children's Librarian Emily Drone said despite all the challenges, they were able to have a strong social media presence.

"We have an employee here who just mines and curates and searches and posts resources for our patrons on our Facebook and Instagram. It's something like taking a tour of a zoo or a museum, or reminding patrons that we have these fantastic e-resources that they can access at home, or just showing off a funny picture and making them laugh. That is another way we keep connected and keep the library in the back of people's minds," explained Drone.

People could also go home with challenge sheets, similar to a Bingo card, for completing tasks like reading books, being kind to someone and participating in a virtual program.

There is also an outdoor obstacle course where you can hop, skip, and jump around the building along the sidewalk.

Library Director Krystal Gulley said many people also rely on the library for internet access so they were happy to re-open in June, even if it's under limited hours.

"We don't want to lose our patrons. They are so used to coming to the library. We usually have something going on several times a week whether it's for kids, teens, or adults," explained Gulley. "Ultimately, we are just doing our jobs. That's the great thing about being a librarian. We are in the business of public service so we can help people every day. It is a very rewarding profession."

Staff said they were honored by the nomination but also want to remind people they are not the only library that has come up with creative ways to keep people involved. They said libraries near and far are in the same boat, and many locally have also stepped up to take on the challenge.
