PERRY CO. (WSIL) -- There's a few upcoming opportunities to help limb-different children in our region and across the country.
This Saturday there will be a golf clinic at the Red Hawk golf course between Pinckneyville and Du Quoin for limb-different children ages 4 to 17.
In the morning, participants will get the chance to learn the foundation skills of the game. Many kids will be paired up with a volunteer coach that shares the same limb-difference as them.
Then in the afternoon, participants will get a chance to hit the greens and put their skills to use.
On Sunday, there will be a golf scramble taking place. Kids who signed up for the clinic, can play at the golf scramble for free.
The golf scramble is also open to singles or teams as a way to raise funds for the Nubability Athletics Foundation.
Usually the group holds large, multi-day camps across the country for limb-different children. Again, allowing them to be mentored by a volunteer who shares the same limb-differnence as the child athlete.
This is often the first time that these kids also get to meet other people their age who are limb-different.
Due to COVID-19, these large multi-sport camps had to be canceled. Instead, smaller one-day clinics are being held across the country, so kids can still have the opportunity to play sports outside and connect with others.
It's a way for the sport camps to be brought to these kids so they don't have to travel possibly further exposing them to the virus, and the sports played are no-contact.
Now that more of these individual clinics have to be held to make up for the larger camps, it will be more expensive for the foundation and additional funds need to be raised.
For those interested in the golf clinic, registration can take place up to the day of the event. Scholarships are also available to help cover the cost.
Individual golfers and teams wanting to play in the scramble are asked to register in advance.
More information on signing up for either event can be found or call the Nubability Athletics Foundation at (618) 357-1394.
