GIDEON, Mo (WSIL) -- The National Weather Service offices in Paducah and Memphis have confirmed in Southeast Missouri was caused by a pair of very strong macrobursts.
occurred in Carter and Ripley counties and stretched from around Grandin to Fairdealing. Winds reached an estimated 95 miles per hour, uprooting and snapping thousands of trees and causing significant power outages. Several homes sustained roof damage from the wind, while more than two dozen barns and garages were destroyed.
occurred farther to the southeast in Dunklin and Pemiscot counties. Winds of up to 110 miles per hour left a 19 mile damage path from near Campbell to Wardell. The strong winds collapsed a warehouse, threw grain bins into neighboring fields, and even destroyed a home when a tree fell on it. The hardest hit community was Gideon.
was also confirmed by the Weather Service in Grandin, in Carter County.
A macroburst is a sustained pulse of severe straight-line winds. As storms collapse, the strong downdraft can reach wind speeds well over 100 miles per hour. A macroburst leaves a path of damage more than two and a half miles. If the path is under two and half miles, it is classified as a microburst.
