PADUCAH (WSIL)--A crash Sunday morning on Interstate 24 near Paducah left one child dead and 9 people injured.

9 vehicles had slowed down because of construction and traffic.

That's when a tractor trailer rig was unable to slow down, causing the pile up.

Of the nine people injured, only one was flown out of state for treatment, and is reported to be in stable condition as of Monday morning.

The interstate was closed for 7 hours following the crash, but is back open.

Paducah Police Chief Brian Laird said the ongoing construction on the Ohio River bridge is a contributing factor in the collision.

"I would say the construction is a contributing factor to that, you would be remiss to not say that whenever folks are having to slow down and it's causing traffic to slow down and merge into one lane. So it definitely contributes to the situation," said Laird.

This is the second fatal crash on I-24 westbound in just more than a month.
