ANNA, Ill (WSIL) -- Meet Penelope, a chihuahua mix who has had tough start at life.

"Penelope is one of a group of nine who was dumped out in a 500 or so acre soybean field, in very very rural southern Illinois," says Karee Sweitzer, Facility Manager of PAWS Place Adoption Center.

Sweitzer says she took it upon herself to make sure all nine dogs were rescued. "Over the course of three weeks, sitting, laying, crawling through a soybean field, we finally got that last one which you are looking at, miss Penelope. She was the last one there."

Since being rescued Sweitzer says that Penelope is shy but has come a long way in just a couple weeks. "They're just really nice dogs but they're super scared. You see what happens. They just get really scared and they just don't trust people because people haven't been very nice to them. Now they're starting to figure out that people are really good and these are just the best babies."

It will time and patience to make Penelope feel comfortable. Sweitzer says they're looking for quiet homes with a fenced in backyard. "They can learn to trust again and learn that somebody's not going to take them to a soybean feel and dump them out and walk away. I mean that's pretty scary. It's hard for any dog but everybody is this size and smaller out there fending for themselves. They're great babies. They really are. They just need somebody that has some patience and love to let them come out of their shell and show you what super personalities they really do have."
