(WSIL) --Â Republican Justice David Overstreet claimed victory overcome Democratic challenger Justice Judy Cates to sit on the highest seat of the Illinois Supreme Court.
Overstreet has nearly 30 years of law experience and vows to bring integrity to the 5th District and be impartial to anyone that comes before him.
Justice Overstreet grew up straight down I-64 to the east in Mt. Vernon. "I went away to school then came back here in 1995 with my wife Suzanne and raised three children in Mt. Vernon," said Overstreet.
He began working as a lawyer in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1991. After moving back to Illinois in 1995, he worked for a law firm in Mt Vernon until being appointed to the Second Judicial Circuit Court in 2007. In 2017, he was assigned to the 5th District Appellate Court and elected to serve on that court in 2018.
This is the first time in 16 years, southern Illinoisans have selected an Illinois Supreme Court judge. Justice Lloyd Karmeier announced he would retire in December 2020
