METROPOLIS (WSIL) -- Metropolis residents have rejected a one-percent sales tax increase.

City leaders said the tax was needed to prevent more budget cuts.

The largest portion of Metropolis' tax revenue comes from gaming, but those numbers have fallen off in the last decade.

Mayor Billy McDaniel that in 2008-2009 the city made "about $8 million" from gaming. In 2020, that number is expected to be around $4 million.

Mayor McDaniel said if the referendum failed at the polls, the city might look at a property tax hike instead.
