SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WREX) � Legislation that seeks to bar Illinois schools from issuing rules pertaining to hairstyles is one step closer to becoming law in the state.

Sen. Mike Simmons (D-Chicago) introduced the bill earlier this month and it was passed out of the .
Currently, at least seven states protect the right to wear protective or natural hairstyles in the workplace and public schools.
SB817 now heads to the House floor for consideration.
