LOUISVILLE, Ky (WSIL) -- Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has secured a seventh term in the U.S. Senate, defeating Democrat challenger Amy McGrath.

McConnell was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1984 and has since become Kentucky's longest serving senator.

He has served as the Senator Minority Leader, Majority Whip, and Chairman of Senate Rules Committee. In 2015, he was elected by his colleagues to become the Senate Majority Leader.

He defeated Democrat Amy McGrath, a retired Marine combat pilot.

McConnell spoke after being re-elected.

“Well, a lot comes to mind on a night like tonight, but first and foremost is gratitude, grateful to live in a Democratic Republic where the people choose our representatives, grateful to be citizens of the greatest nation in history. And Kentucky, I'm humbled and grateful that you re-hired me to keep fighting for your families and serving our Commonwealth for the next six years.

McGrath issued a virtual statement to the public and her supporters.
