White House announces sweeping immigration bill

(CNN) -- The White House announced a sweeping immigration bill Thursday that would shorten the path to citizenship for millions of immigrants already in the country.

The measure fast tracks that path from its current 13 years to 8 years and provides a shorter track for undocumented immigrants brought into the U.S. as children.

It would require some republican support because the bill needs 60 votes in the Senate. Democrats have 50 votes there.

Officials say the legislation is an attempt by President Joe Biden to restart a conversation on immigration and that he is open to negotiating.

The bill could be broken up into several smaller measures like several standalone bills that have already been introduced into Congress on revising the immigration system.

One of those includes a reintroduction of the Dream Act, which provides a path to citizenship for the so-called Dreamers, people brought into the U.S. as children.

Another possibility could try to apply the reconciliation process to the bill, which would allow them to pass it with a simple majority.
