School district reverting back to remote learning

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Carbondale Elementary District 95 announced Thursday its schools are moving to all remote learning starting Monday.

The Superintendent of Schools, Daniel Booth released a detail statement explaining to students and their families the reason behind their decision.

The statement thanked the families for their patience and understanding as they navigate the new challenges and frequent inconveniences caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Booth continued by stating the district made the decision to revert to full remote learning after they had been in frequent contact with the Jackson County Health Department during the entire situation.

The rapid rise of COVID-19 cases in Jackson County is the main reason behind the health department and school district's decision. As of Sunday this week, Jackson County's rolling seven-day positivity rate is 11.6 percent. In addition to rising cases and increased test positivity, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at a record-high, and healthcare facilities of all types are facing staff shortages due to isolation and quarantine.

The district said it recognizes this decision may make it difficult for families to plan for childcare during these changing times, and the district will continue to partner with community daycare centers to ensure that they are supporting their students who need to attend those facilities each day.

At this time, the district does not see returning to in-person learning before Winter Break (December 21, 2020 to January 1, 2021). At a later time, Booth said the district will release an exact date for returning to in-person learning.

Each child's teacher will share the updated schedule for each child next week.
