SIU Carbondale Hosts Remembrance Event

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois University Carbondale honored all students who have died in recent years with a community remembrance event.

Among those whose lives were honored were three Salukis who died separately in September.

SIU has experienced 19 student deaths over the past 3 years

The tribute event, “Once a Saluki, Always a Saluki� took place at Becker Pavilion on Campus Lake on the evening of Monday, September 30.

 hosted the event, which was planned by students for students and the community.

(CAPS) was on hand to help students address mental health concerns. , and also provided support.

Earlier this month, the SIU family lost:

  • Ramesh Muthina, a master’s student in health informatics from India and member of the Indian Student Association.
  • Selena Hubbard, a senior psychology major from Wilmington, Illinois.
  • Henry “Hankâ€� Souders, an automotive technology major from Oak Park, Illinois.

Students, faculty, staff and community members were invited to attend the event and light candles and share stories and memories.

Mark is senior anchor at WSIL, co-anchoring the weekday evening newscasts at 5:00, 6:00, 6:30, and 10:00. He recently celebrated 39 years of being on-air at WSIL and in September of 2024, he marked 41 total years at WSIL.
