UPDATE -- December 26, 2019, 7:30 p.m.

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSIL) -- Authorities are still investigating how an empty car ended up in Rend Lake.

Sheriff David Bartoni says the owner of the vehicle did not know it was missing until authorities notified him.

The Sheriff's office is investigating who took the car and how it ended up in the water.

ORIGINIAL STORY

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSIL) -- Fishermen find an empty car underwater near a boat ramp at Rend Lake.

Brian Barva co-owner of Crappie Extreme Fishing Guide Service says he and some friends found the car at around 7 a.m. on Wednesday, December 25 near Rend Lake's west dam.

Barva said it was the last thing he expected to see. "Whenever we put the boat in the water, I was getting everything ready to go out and start the day, and I looked over and saw something grey under the water," he said. "I looked closer at saw a sunroof. I'm glad nobody was inside."

Fire and rescue teams from Franklin County responded to the scene and pulled the vehicle from the water.

Officials are still investigating the incident.
