Freeze Damage

MURPHYSBORO (WSIL) -- Farmers are surveying their produce to see how they faired during the coldest temperatures early Friday morning.

Greg McLaughlin -- Owner of McLaughlin Strawberry Farms -- says his damage was minimal thanks to the covers he applied to both his strawberries and tomatoes.

The majority of his crop has been covered over the past several nights -- and has faired just fine, but he says he's not able to keep all of his crop covered. It's those plants that went uncovered that suffered damage early Friday morning.

McLaughlin says despite the damage -- this years crop still has potential for success.

"This year's crop of strawberries looks way better than last year's crop, just the nature. We had great fall set, for establishing the strawberries, and the plants are showing it with good health and vigor."

He says to be looking for their strawberries soon, as their strawberry season should start near the first week of May.
