CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (WSIL) -- The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating after a suspect shot and killed himself in police custody.

Cape Girardeau Police arrested the suspect around 12:20 a.m. Friday after reports of a robbery in the 100 block of Cape West Parkway.

Police say the suspect, identified as a 24-year-old Jackson, Missouri man, was also a person-of-interest in recent weapon violations.

"This suspect was then transported from the scene to the Cape Girardeau Police Department. While secured inside a holding room, this suspect retrieved a handgun that he had stolen from a victim and concealed on his person. This suspect held the weapon to his head and fired one single shot from the handgun," said a statement Friday from the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

Jail staff, officers, and medical personnel responded to render aid, but the suspect died from the gunshot wound.

The primary investigation has been turned over to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The Cape Girardeau Police Department is also conducting an internal investigation into the incident.
