SIKESTON, MO. (WSIL) -- There's an upcoming opportunity where you can practice your swing and help put a stop to hunger.

The Southeast Missouri Food Bank Golf Classic is set to take place on August 30th.

This will be the 10th year for the event, and teams will hit the greens at the Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. Activities that day include a long drive and hole-in-one contest, raffles, prizes and awards.

Lunch and refreshments will also be provided at no additional cost.

While it's a fun day to get outside with family, friends or co-workers; it is for a serious cause.

Money raised is spread across 16 counties including some counties facing the most food insecurity within the state.

Lisa Church, who's the Chief Advancement Officer for the SEMO Food Banks, say  everyone from children to the elderly benefit.

"We use those funds to purchase food to supply our families," she explains. " Particularly for some of our children's programs like our weekend backpacks for kids during the school year."

The SEMO Food Bank has partnered with 30 area schools for "Backpacks for Fridays." The program gives more than a thousand children in need non-perishable, easy to prepare foods for each weekend during the academic year.

Those interested in furthering that cause by golfing or sponsoring the event can find out more information by .
