Candle Used During Power Outage Blamed for Deadly House Fire

MOREHOUSE, Mo. -- One person is dead after a home caught fire on Monday morning.

The New Madrid County Sheriff's Office stated at around 4 a.m. on May 27, sheriff's deputies and fire crews from Sikeston and Morehouse, went to the 500-block of E. Pine Street in Morehouse for a home on fire.

When crews arrived, smoke was coming out of the house from two sides. The sheriff's office said firefighters went into the home and found a woman on the floor in the main bedroom.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene by the New Madrid County Coroner.

The coroner later told News 3 the deceased woman was identified as 51-year-old Charity Evans.

The sheriff's office said an unattended candle is to blame for the fire as it was being used as a light source while the power was out.

The corner said this fire is under investigation by the state fire marshal's office.
