MARION, Ill. -- Illinois State Police (ISP) reported five crashes involving ISP squad cars over the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.
One of those incidents happened in Marion when a trooper was assisting with a crash along I-57.
It happened on January 14, at 5:05 p.m. on the right shoulder of the I-57 exit ramp in Marion.
ISP said the car was fully marked with lights activated and parked while the trooper was assisting with a crash. At this time, a Mitsubishi Galant was driving by when it lost control and hit the rear of the ISP squad car.
The impact caused the ISP squad car to collide with an IDOT truck which was also assisting with the original crash.
The ISP Trooper was then taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was identified as Liani I. Anino, 18 of Greenfield, Ind., and was charged with the Move Over Law - Failure to Yield to Stationary Emergency Vehicle and also cited a Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid and Accident offense.
Other crashes involving ISP squad cars occurred in Kane County on January 12, DuPage County on January 14, Cook County on January 14, and Will County on January 15.
In 2023, ISP had 21 Move Over Law-related crashes. In 2022, ISP had 23 Move Over Law-related crashes where eight troopers sustained injuries. ISP reminds the public that the Move Over Law requires all drivers to move over when approaching an emergency vehicle, or any vehicle with their emergency or hazard lights activated.
