CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Carbondale Police have announced open investigations into a number of stolen vehicles.

Police say the series of successful and attempted thefts began on May 7. The main brands represented in the targeted cars are Kia, Hyundai and Doge (Challengers).

The Kia and Hyundai cars tended to be made from 2011 and 2022, according to Carbondale Police. These cars usually lack an engine immobilizer, making them easier to steal. Immobilizers keep car engines from starting without a key near the engine.

Police say the investigations into these thefts are still ongoing. Those who have not reported a theft or attempted theft are urged to do so.

Carbondale Police has presented the following tips to keep cars safe from possible theft:

  • Keep keys on your person
  • Roll up windows when car is unattended
  • Keep car doors locked
  • Do not leave car running when unattended
  • Park in lit spots with video surveillance at night
  • Install anti-theft devices: alarm system, steering wheel locks, kill switches
  • Implant a car tracking system

Police ask anyone with information on these crimes to call the office at 618-549-2121.
