MARION, Ky. -- Kentucky officials have reached an agreement with the Cave-in-Rock Ferry to keep the service in operation for the next two years.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) posted the update to at 3:06 p.m. on Saturday. This was roughly 30 hours before the old contract was scheduled to expire.

“I applaud the teamwork among all our partners to negotiate an improved agreement that ensures citizens of Western Kentucky will remain connected to their neighbors and neighboring communities in ¾ÅÓÎÌåÓý Illinois,â€ said KYTC Secretary Jim Gray. “The updated contract ensures transparent and responsible terms are in place to appropriately manage taxpayer dollars from both states used to support the private ferry operation.â€

The agreement will increase the funding for the ferry by 13%. The terms outlined in the new contract require a more open look at how state funds get allocated to the ferry.

The KYTC say its team partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation since February to come to an agreement with the Ferry group.

The Cave-in-Rock Ferry will remain free to bring residents from Cave-in-Rock, IL to Crittenden County, Ky.
