MT. VERNON, Ill. -- Police arrested a child late Thursday night after a series of attempted break-ins to smoke shops in Mt. Vernon.
The Mount Vernon Police Department were sent to an alarm at the Thrive Dispensary around 11:44 p.m. on Thursday. Police said the store at 800 S 45th St. saw some damage to one of its doors.
About 45 minutes later, at 12:29 a.m. on Friday, another alarm went off at the Smoke Smart at 410 S 27th St. Police responded and again noted damage to a door. Investigators studied footage from the store's cameras and noticed a suspect.
Just 12 minutes later, at 12:41 a.m., police spotted the suspect leaving CBD Wellness Center at 3300 Broadway. A release about this situation notes this store too saw damage. The suspect noticed the police watching him and ran away on a bike.
Police say they chased the suspect into a neighborhood, where the suspect got off the bike and continued to run. Eventually, officers were successful in containing the suspect.
Police took the suspect to a local juvenile detention center. Investigators say the suspect was on probation for previous crimes and out past the set curfew. The suspect received new charges of Attempted Burglary and Resisting Arrest.
