GOREVILLE, Ill. (WSIL) -- Law enforcement retrieved a gun which was found in a juvenile's backpack after school earlier this month in southern Illinois, according to local authorities.

Johnson County Sheriff Pete Sopczak told News 3 a stepmother called authorities after finding a firearm in a bookbag after the juvenile came home from the Goreville Community Unit School District.

Sopczak said the stepmom found the gun after the child's mother called and asked about a flashlight from an Ullin officer's duty belt.

The stepmom called law enforcement to come get the gun after it was found in the backpack, Sheriff Sopczak added.

Sopczak also detailed the juvenile got the gun in Union County.

Law enforcement with the sheriff's office wrote up a report and turned it over to the Union County State's Attorney's Office and notified the Department of Children & Family Services, Sopczak added.

News 3 called the Union County State's Attorney's Office and left a message. We also called the Ullin Police Department to try to get more information as well.

As we learn more, we will provide the information to the public.
