HERRIN, Ill. -- The K9 officer at the Herrin Police Department received some new gear this week.Ìý
K9 Kahos will now wear a bullet and stab protection vest on his outings with Herrin Police. The department says the armor is a donation from the non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s. Vested stitched a memorial for fallen K9 Officer Hobbs from Des Moines, IA into the vest.Ìý
Vested works to provide these vests for K9 officers across the U.S. The armor is made in the U.S. and custom-fitted for each dog. They are for K9 officers who are at least 20 months old and actively involved at a law agency.Ìý
The program has thus far provided over 5,500 vests for dogs across the nation. Private and corporate donations have raised almost $7 million to provide these materials.Ìý
