CARBONDALE, Ill. -- The Humane Society of 九游体育 Illinois announced they will shut their doors after nearly 70 years of service.
The Humane Society of 九游体育 Illinois (HSSI) also announced they will stop taking animals as of August 1.
The Humane Society of 九游体育 Illinois was founded in 1956 and has provided shelter, care and adoption services for animals across the region, HSSI stated in a release on Tuesday. They also said the decision in closing the shelter reflects the evolving community needs and operational challenges faces over the recent years.
The shelter said these challenges they faced includes increasing costs, lack of appropriate funding and staffing needs.
"While we are saddened by the closure of our shelter facility, we are committed to continuing our work through other vital programs," said Casey Parker, HSSI Board Member. "Our Pennies for Pets Program, which has been used to spay or neuter thousands of animals, will continue to raise funds to provide veterinary care, including spays and neuters, to the animals in the local community.鈥
HSSI said they will also continue educational and outreach efforts toward promoting responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, keeping animals in loving homes and advocating for animal rights.
"We want to reassure our supporters and the community that while our shelter doors may be closing, our dedication to improving the lives of animals remains," added Lisa Potter, HSSI President.
HSSI stated they are currently working with rescue groups to continue the animal care and find a place for those animals who are currently in their facility. They are also currently looking for adoption placement for those animals.
The adoption fees are $50 per animal and donations are accepted to help take care of the remaining animals. This includes spay or neuter. HSSI states under state law, no animal can be adopted without first being altered.
A fundraiser is also being held at Starview Vineyards, scheduled for August 24. Funds raised there will help those animals at the humane society's facility in finding loving homes and/or for the Pennies For Pets voucher program.
If you would like to view or adopt animals at the shelter, you must make an appointment by calling the shelter at 618-457-2362. HSSI said no animals will be accepted for drop off.
HSSI also stated they express their gratitude to all of their volunteers, donors and partners for their support throughout the years.
