Illinois Commission gifting loan relief to state's social workers

DEERFIELD, Ill. -- The state of Illinois is working to help the state's social workers pay off their degrees. 

The Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) has launched applications for the School and Municipal Social Work Shortage Loan Repayment Program. Eligible recipients will earn up to $6,500 for loan repayment. 

"The program is intended to assist in paying eligible loans as an incentive to participate in the school work field," the ISAC wrote on its website. 

The ISAC hopes to focus relief on minorities underrepresented in the field.

Applicants for the reward must: 

  • Be a US citizen or meet the "undocumented student" criteria of the RISE Act
  • Live in Illinois 
  • Have a balance on one of the following loans
    • Stafford Loans
    • Perkins Loans
    • Graduate PLUS Loans
    • Consolidation loans
    • Supplemental Loans for Students
    • Alternative loans
    • Other government and institutional loans used for education expenses
