SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- Illinois State Police arrested a suspect in an April bomb threat to two government buildings.

Police arrested Gabrielle Williams, 23, on Thursday. This came after a weeks-long investigation into the threats via interviews and cell-phone data.

Williams is currently held in the Sangamon County Jail awaiting trial. She remains innocent until a jury deems her guilty.

ISP first learned of the threats on April 22, when the Illinois Department of Human Services alerted the police's Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center. Officials alerted police to a threat at a public aid office and the State Capitol.

Police triggered the State Agency Facility and Employee (SAFE) Threat Protocol. The objectives of this plan are:

  • Capture, assess and route threat information
  • Investigate threats toward state employees, offices and executives
  • Maintain a comprehensive understanding of the material reported and outcomes

“ISP took immediate action upon receiving information about this bomb threat and implemented our SAFE Threat Protocol, said ISP Director Brendan F. Kelly. “Deploying ISP resources as quickly as possible allows our special agents to track down crucial information, identify suspects, and make arrests. ISP and our law enforcement partners in Springfield take every threat seriously and will track down and arrest those responsible for this criminal conduct.

The Secretary of State (SOS) Capitol Police worked to confirm the capitol was clear and safe. ISP and the Springfield Police Department worked to make the other building stable while they awaited the SOS team's arrival.
