MT. VERNON, Ill. -- The PawFest Committee with Mt. Vernon Festivals announced the year's Top Dag Award recipients on Wednesday morning.Â
The award goes to individuals who gave a large portion of their time to helping animals in the region. This year, Char Rosa and Mike Hensley received the honor.Â
"The Top Dog Award is given to individuals who made a significant contribution to the lives of animals in Jefferson County," said Mt. Vernon Festivals Vice President Lisa Damron. "Char and Mike are both outstanding examples of people who have gone above and beyond to help our furry friends."Â
Rosa has spent over 12 years volunteering for the Jefferson County Animal Control. A bulk of her work has focused on highlighting pets available at the shelter on social media.Â
"I'm just trying to do my part to make a difference in the lives of these animals," said Rosa. "They deserve to be happy and healthy, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to help them."
Hensley, meanwhile, helps to walk and train the animals three to four days a week. The PawFest Committee highlighted his dedication and compassion for the pets when awarding him the honor.Â
"I love working with the dogs," Hensley said. "They're always so excited to see me, and it's great to know that I'm making a difference in their lives."Â
