DEKALB, Ill. -- Police arrested a man on Wednesday in relation to the recent death of an officer.

Illinois State Police (ISP) arrested Nathan P. Sweeney, 44, of DeKalb, as the prime suspect in the crime. Police believe Sweeney killed Deputy Christina Musil while driving under the influence.

Musil died in a car crash on March 28 around 10:30 p.m. Musil sat in her parked patrol car on the side of IL Route 23 in Waterman. ISP says, as Sweeney drove his service truck by Musil's car, he lost control and ran into the back of Musil's car.

Officials immediately brought Musil to a hospital, but efforts to save her were unsuccessful.

Sweeney received citations from ISP for Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident, Improper Lane Usage, and Operating an Uninsured Motor Vehicle on the night of the crash. DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, however, asked ISP to further investigate the crash.

ISP's investigation into the situation led them to believe Sweeney had taken drugs prior to the crash. The DeKalb County State's Attorney's Office issued Sweeney further charges of:

  • Aggravated DUI Causing Death, three counts
  • Reckless Homicide

Sweeney now sits in the Ogle County Jail awaiting a court trial.
