MURPHYSBORO, Ill. -- A simple event posted to Facebook managed to trick over 6,000 community members.聽
Recently, an "event" page appeared on the Southern Illinois Airport Facebook page. The page described an Air Show that was set for Saturday afternoon at the Murphysboro Airport and showed over 6,000 people were "interested" in the event.聽
However, Mayor Will Stephens took to 聽to alert residents that the event was fake.聽
"There is no event like this at the SI Airport this weekend," Stephens said. "There is no such event happening anytime this year at the SI airport."
News 3 reached out to the airport Thursday morning, who also confirmed the event was a hoax.聽
At this time, details surrounding the origin of the event page remain unclear.聽 A screenshot of the event page credits Spirit of St. Louis Air Show 2024 as the organizer. However, that organization's 聽details a show that occurred in Chesterfield, MO back in June.聽
According to a comment on the Mayor's Facebook Post from RJ Ihle, the event had been revealed as a hoax previously from the airport over a month ago.聽
