CARBONDALE, Ill. -- SIU Carbondale awarded 33 students with a prestigious first-year scholarship this school year.Â
The university cites the students' hard work in school and around their communities as the factors that pushed them over the edge in the fight for the Chancellor's and Provost's Scholarships.
The Chancellor's Scholarship goes to first-year students and covers tuition, fees, on-campus housing and meals for four years. The 22 recipients beat over 600 other applicants for the honor.Â
The Provost's Scholarship, meanwhile, is awarded to transfer students for tuition and fees for two years. The 11 students who received the award competed against 153 total applicants.Â
The school examined the students' academic performances, extracurricular activities, leadership roles and essays to decide the winners.Â
The recipients will now get the chance to enter the SIU Honors Program.Â
