The Poplar Bluff Police Department reported it was a Poplar Bluff High School student who was on campus at the high school building on Tuesday morning.

Police said employees at the school found out a student was carrying a handgun. The faculty and staff then quickly worked with the School Resource Officer there, found the student and seized the gun.

"Superintendent Aaron Cornman emphasized that there was never any danger to students or faculty at the school," the Poplar Bluff Police Department said in a Facebook post. "The student told faculty that they were carrying the gun for protection because they had been threatened by an adult in the community."

The student was taken into custody and the investigation is ongoing.
