Two now dead after house fire in Jefferson County

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ill. -- Two people are now dead after a house fire near Waltonville on Wednesday morning.

The Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse confirms to News 3 on Thursday morning, a second person has died. The second fire victim passed away on Wednesday night.

In an earlier report on Wednesday, we learned one person died and the second person in the fire was air lifted to a hospital.

We now know the two deceased are a male and a female.

Multiple area fire departments and emergency personnel responded to the fire call when it broke out on Wednesday morning.

The fire happened on Vermont Lane in Jefferson County, just east of the Waltonville area.

Hayse told News 3 there was an autopsy scheduled for Thursday for the first victim who died.

The identities of the deceased are not being released at this time, pending family notification.

Hayse said the State Fire Marshal is investigating.
